Design Program LeadDiscovery to AI4+ years

An end-to-end design program for a 25-year media-intelligence platform.

I came in as one designer and analyst. I ran discovery, set the strategy, built the design system, shipped across web, mobile and email, and owned the product for over four years. Client names stay under NDA, so the work speaks here. Press play.

A four minute walkthrough of the redesigned product: power search, watchlists, the clip viewer and editor, reports and the media centre. Turn the sound on.

The domain

What a media-intelligence platform does.

Media monitoring, or media intelligence, tracks what is said about a brand, person or topic across broadcast TV and radio, podcasts and online media, in near real time.

Analysts search it, get alerted to spikes and sentiment shifts, clip and edit the moments that matter, and package them into reports for PR, communications and crisis teams. This platform spans thousands of broadcast, podcast and online sources across dozens of countries, with transcripts, metadata, audio and video.

The program rebuilt it from a dated tool into a modern, multi-platform system, then added an AI layer for sentiment, smart alerts and entities.

Discovery

What we found in the legacy product, and what we shipped.

Discovery surfaced the same picture from every angle: a powerful but dated product that had become hard to use and hard to sell. We mapped it end to end, then fixed it.

User pain points
  • Dated design and outdated UX patterns
  • No usable mobile version
  • Search could not target specific markets or stations
  • Online video review was slow, so users downloaded instead
  • Alerts forced a re-login, and sharing was clumsy
Business problems
  • Hard to retain customers and win new clients with a dated product
  • Time lost on trivial manual tasks like password resets
  • Only one of three products was thriving
  • No design system, so every release widened the inconsistency
Solutions shipped
  • A Material-based design system as one source of truth
  • Search by market, station, date and saved presets
  • A responsive mobile companion
  • Self-service password reset and account management
  • Sentiment, smart alerts, sharing and instant play links
The work in numbers

Discovery rigour, multi-year delivery.

Every decision traced back to evidence. Interviews and workshops fed a journey map of about thirty steps, then a design system and the flows built on top of it.

8
Stakeholders interviewed across the business.
13
User interviews, watching how people actually worked.
4
Discovery workshops to align the team and the client.
~50
Pain points defined and prioritised across the products.
~30
Customer journey map steps, desktop and mobile.
~80
Ideas and solutions generated from the findings.

The expertise behind it

Discovery and strategy, a design system, and years of product ownership.

I do not hand off a redesign and leave. I run the program: name the problems, set the direction, build the system, and stay to own the product as it grows.

Discovery and strategy

Stakeholder and user research, system audits, journey mapping, information architecture, and the backlog and roadmap that come out of them. Problems are named and agreed before a single solution is drawn.

Design system and multi-platform

A token-driven Material UI library with WCAG 2 Level AA built into the tokens, shipped across desktop, mobile and email. One system, every screen, and a hand-off an engineering team can ship from on day one.

Product ownership and AI

I ran the product as Product Owner for years, then led an AI release on the same foundation: sentiment analysis, smart alerts and AI-powered entities, added without breaking the design language.

The AI release

A second iteration: sentiment, smart alerts, and AI entities.

Once the foundation was stable in production, I led an AI release on the same design system. Discovery, prototyping and high fidelity in compressed cycles, without breaking the design language.

The AI release in three minutes: how sentiment, smart alerts and AI entities were designed on top of the existing system.
